Japan does not have a domestic search engine the way China has Baidu, Korea has Naver, or Russia has Yandex. That surprises people, because Japan is otherwise full of homegrown platforms that beat the American incumbents.
Here is the complete picture for 2026: who is actually used, what runs underneath each one, and why the market share figures you will find disagree with each other.
The short answer
- Google is the most used search engine in Japan, and its index also powers Yahoo! JAPAN and goo.
- There is no Japanese equivalent of Google. Japan tried, and the domestic engines lost.
- Bing’s measured share has risen sharply, concentrated on desktop, and this is the one genuinely new fact since 2024.
- For SEO, the practical count is not “how many engines” but “how many indexes”. In Japan, effectively two.
Search engines used in Japan, 2026
| Engine | Share (Statcounter, July 2026) | Whose index it uses |
|---|---|---|
| 59.73% | ||
| Bing | 32.07% | Microsoft |
| Yahoo! JAPAN | 6.55% | |
| DuckDuckGo | 0.71% | Bing (primarily) |
| Yandex | 0.37% | Yandex |
| goo | below measurement threshold |
Read that third column again. It is the column that matters, and almost no guide includes it.
Once you collapse the engines by index, Japan has Google’s index at roughly two-thirds of search, and Microsoft’s at roughly a third. Everything else rounds to noise.
Why the numbers you find disagree
If you search for this in Japanese, you will find industry sources published in 2026 still citing Google at around 76% and Yahoo! at around 12%. Statcounter says 59.73% and 6.55%. Both are being quoted as current. This confuses a lot of people, so it is worth explaining rather than picking one.
- Statcounter measures page views on sites carrying its tracking code. It is a sample, and the composition of that sample moves. A change in which browsers people use at work shifts the number even if nobody changed their search habits.
- Many Japanese-language articles are recycling 2024 figures without re-checking, which is how a 76% number survives into 2026.
- Desktop and mobile diverge sharply in Japan. Bing’s rise is a desktop phenomenon; Japanese consumer search is overwhelmingly mobile.
The honest position: nobody publishes a definitive figure, the direction of travel for Bing on desktop is real, and your own analytics beat every number on this page. Segment your Japanese sessions by engine and by device before you plan around any of it.

The engines, one by one
Google Japan
The default. Same systems as everywhere else, applied to Japanese-language queries. AI Overviews launched in Japanese on 15 August 2024 and AI Mode on 9 September 2025, so a growing share of Japanese informational queries now resolves above the organic results.
Yahoo! JAPAN
A separate company from Yahoo! elsewhere, now part of LY Corporation alongside LINE and PayPay. It is one of Japan’s most visited web properties, and its organic web results have been supplied by Google since 2010 — an arrangement contracted through 31 March 2027.
Its search share is modest; its reach as a portal is not. The two are constantly confused. Full detail in Google vs. Yahoo! JAPAN, and the practical implications in Yahoo! JAPAN SEO.
Bing
The one real change since 2024. Bing went from under 8% of measured Japanese search in early 2025 to roughly a third by mid-2026, concentrated on desktop.
A jump that size in that time is not users changing their minds. It is defaults — Edge shipping with Bing on new machines, and Copilot integration across Japanese corporate environments. In Japan, desktop largely means the office PC, which makes this a B2B-weighted phenomenon rather than a consumer one.
If you sell to Japanese enterprises, check your own Bing share. If you sell to Japanese consumers, the headline number almost certainly overstates your exposure.
goo
A long-running Japanese portal — news, weather, transit, a dictionary that Japanese users still reach for — with web search results supplied by Google underneath. People encounter goo pages in Japanese search results far more often than they use goo as a search engine.
Everything else
DuckDuckGo and Yandex register fractions of a percent. Baidu has no meaningful Japanese presence. There is no Japanese-market engine you need to optimize for separately.
Why Japan has no domestic search engine
This is the question behind most of the searches that bring people to this page, and it has an actual answer.
Japan did have domestic engines — goo, Infoseek Japan, and others through the late 1990s and 2000s. They lost the same way most national engines lost: web search became a capital-intensive infrastructure business, and the country that had a head start kept it.
What makes Japan different from China, Korea and Russia is not that its engines were worse. It is that Japan had no language barrier that Google could not cross, and no regulatory wall behind which a domestic engine could grow. Google invested in Japanese-language search early and well. Yahoo! JAPAN — the one player with the audience to sustain an alternative — chose in 2010 to license Google’s technology rather than compete with it.
Japan’s homegrown platforms won in the places where local context is the product: LINE in messaging, Rakuten and Yahoo!ショッピング in commerce, Yahoo!知恵袋 in Q&A, Yahoo!ニュース in news aggregation. Search was not one of those places.

What this means if you are doing SEO for Japan
- Optimize once, for Google. It covers Google, Yahoo! JAPAN and goo — the large majority of Japanese search.
- Do not buy “multi-engine Japanese SEO”. There is one organic index that matters, plus Bing.
- Check your Bing share once, properly. Then decide whether it deserves budget. For most consumer brands it will not; for enterprise software it might.
- The engine is not your problem — the language is. The reason foreign companies underperform in Japan is almost never which engine they targeted. It is that they translated their content instead of building it in Japanese. That is covered in our Japan market-entry SEO guide.
Common questions
What search engine does Japan use?
Mostly Google. Yahoo! JAPAN and goo also run on Google’s index, so Google’s results reach a larger share of Japanese users than Google’s own measured share suggests. Bing has grown sharply on desktop since 2025.
Is there a Japanese version of Google?
No. Google Japan is Google, serving Japanese-language results. Japan has no domestic search engine with meaningful share.
Do Japanese people use Google?
Yes, heavily — directly and through Yahoo! JAPAN without necessarily knowing it.
What is the best search engine for Japanese content?
Google, for coverage. If you are researching a Japanese market rather than building for it, Yahoo!知恵袋 and Yahoo!ニュース are worth reading directly — they show how Japanese users phrase things, which a search engine will not tell you.
