Japanese developers read English documentation without difficulty. They still search in Japanese, and what they find is usually not your documentation — it is an article written by another Japanese engineer about your product.
That gap is the whole problem, and it is not solved by translating your docs.
Where Japanese technical knowledge actually accumulates
Japan has a technical publishing layer with no clean Western equivalent. Stack Overflow and Dev.to are the closest comparisons, and neither occupies the same position.

The consequence is uncomfortable for vendors: for a great many Japanese queries about your product, the page that ranks is written by someone who does not work for you. They may be out of date, may describe a workaround for a bug you fixed, and are almost certainly more trusted than your own page.

Should you translate the documentation?
Partly. The answer differs by document type, and treating “the docs” as one thing is where budget gets wasted.
- Reference material — API listings, parameter tables, error codes — is often better left in English. Japanese engineers read it fine, and translation introduces a real risk: a mistranslated technical term produces a document that is fluent, confident and wrong. English terminology is also what they will paste into a search box.
- Getting started, concepts and architecture benefit from Japanese. This is where a reader decides whether the tool fits their situation, and where reading in a second language costs real energy.
- Anything a non-engineer will read must be in Japanese. Pricing, security posture, compliance, company information. The person approving the purchase is frequently not the person evaluating the tool.

Machine-translated docs are worse than English
Worth stating plainly, because it is the default shortcut.
Technical Japanese has settled conventions for how borrowed terms are written, which ones stay in English, and which get katakana. Machine translation does not know your product’s conventions and will render the same term three ways across one document. To a Japanese engineer this does not read as a translation artefact — it reads as a vendor who does not have anyone competent working on Japanese, which is a conclusion about your company rather than your docs.
English documentation signals nothing bad. Broken Japanese does.
What actually works
Be accurate on the pages you do not own
Search your product name in Japanese and read what comes back. Where an article describes an old version, a removed limitation or a workaround you have since fixed, the fix is a comment or a message to the author, not a new page of your own that will not outrank it.
This is unglamorous, takes an hour a month, and is the highest-return activity on this page.
Write for the error message
A large share of Japanese developer search is somebody pasting an error string. Those queries are specific, low competition, and land the reader at the exact moment they need you. Most vendors never publish a page for their own error messages, which leaves the ground to whoever hit it first and blogged about it.
Let engineers write, and let them publish where engineers read
An article by a named Japanese engineer, published on a platform the community already reads, does more than the equivalent post on your corporate blog. Marketing-voiced content is identified instantly and dismissed. If you have a Japanese engineer, their byline is your most valuable asset in this channel.

Sponsor the community rather than advertise to it
Study groups and meetups are how Japanese developer communities cohere. Supporting one — venue, food, a speaking slot on something technical rather than promotional — buys standing that no campaign does. It is slow and it compounds.
Measuring this honestly
Developer marketing resists last-click measurement more than any other category, and the usual response is either to over-claim or to stop funding it.
- Track Japanese brand search volume over time. If the community is talking about you, this rises before anything else does.
- Count third-party Japanese articles about your product, monthly. It is a crude number and it moves in the right direction when the work is going well.
- Check whether Japanese AI assistants name you when asked to recommend tools in your category. They draw on the same Japanese-language corpus the developers do, which makes this a reasonable proxy for community presence.
Common questions
Our product is developer-facing. Do we need Japanese SEO at all?
Yes, and for a different reason than a consumer brand does. Not because your users cannot read English, but because the person who approves the budget often cannot, and because the Japanese-language articles about you exist whether you participate or not.
Should we post on Qiita and Zenn ourselves?
Only with a real engineer’s byline and genuinely useful content. Promotional posts from vendor accounts are recognised immediately and cost more standing than they gain.
Is English-language SEO enough if our docs are in English?
It captures the engineer already looking for you by name. It does not capture the engineer searching a problem in Japanese, which is where discovery happens.
